New computer models are fast partially because they are using the NTFS file system. The older systems – the FAT16 file system and FAT23 file system – can only dish out speed that are below of the capacity of NTFS. If your PC is running in either of the old file systems, seriously consider changing your hard drive.

Disable bugs in your PC. Malware harms computer in many nasty ways. While non-malicious malware like adware and spayware may not necessarily corrupt your PC, these still use up computer resources which could be used for more valuable purposes. To ensure that your computer is protected from such malware, scan your PC regularly using malware detection and protection program software.

Disable the indexing service. Windows XP is armed with various services that make searching for and readying of files easier for the users. The trouble though is that these services often prevent your PC to run as fast as it can. One of such services is the indexing service. According to many computer geeks, computers can work without the indexing service. This service only use up computer resources and in no significant way help the PC’s operation. It is therefore always open for the option of deletion. To disable the indexing service, go to My Computer, right click on your hard drive and select Properties. Remove the check mark on the box that says, “Allow indexing service to index this hard drive for faster searching”, hit OK then close.

Disable the visual effects that you don’t need. Windows XP dish out superb speed and brilliant visual effects. These qualities are good except that they eat up too much computer resources. To boost your PC’s speed, disable some of its visual effects.

Optimize Boot Up. Overtime, your computer will accumulate entries in its Startup folder. If it takes you decades to see your desktop, try disabling some of the applications in your Startup folder via the MSCONGIF tool. While you’re at it, disable all the unnecessary applications, programs and services in your computer. To fully remove all traces of the deleted programs in the Startup folder, hit START, type services.msc, and delete the previously disabled files.
