Why Is My Computer Running Slow? – These Are The Reasons and Solutions

I always receive phone calls from friends, families and work colleagues, few minutes into the conversation, they pause and ask me this same questions I have had to answer 2000 times in my career “Why Is My Computer Running Slow?”.

The simplest way to deal with this question is to use a simple analogy, and my favorite analogy is a car. People are familiar with car services. If you service car on a regular basis, you won’t have to worry about problems with the car, and your car will performs more efficiently.

Same thing applies to our PC. Over a long period of usage people couldn’t care less about “servicing” their system. Some of my friends and family don’t even have anti spyware installed on their system.

It should be illegal not to have antivirus, anti spyware, or firewall installed on your computer in this day and age.Previously, these malicious software (spyware, adware, keyloggers, virus etc) were developed by smart kids. These people were bored, and most of them hated Microsoft (I don’t know why – but most likely because Microsoft sells lots of software).

Today these malicious programs are created by huge network of criminals for profit. They develop spyware software to spy on your browsing habit. They use adware to display advertisement to your browsing habit, the more adverts you see and click on, the more money they make. On the other hand if they corrupt your system with a malicious software, they can also sell you another program to remove the software, because only them know how to remove what they installed on your computer.

If you are still asking yourself “why is my computer running slow”, then do yourself a favor, remove all the malicious (rogue) software on your computer, delete all the junk files, fix the computer registry, remove the start up items and maximize the memory use on your computer. Sometimes none of this will work especially if you have a very old computer. In that case I suggest you buy a new computer.

If you do not have a clue of how to fix all the computer problems I stated above, I suggest you watch my video tutorials that shows you step by step how to improve the efficiency of any computer system with point and click solutions.

Why is your computer running Slow?

The problem we most come across in our IT workshop is customers complaining about their computer being slow.  “When we first bought it, it was really fast!” is what we always hear.

With computers being as complex as they are now and the amount of software that gets installed over its lifetime, it’s no wonder they start to slow down. Viruses and spyware can have a dramatic affect on your computers running speed but even after getting rid of these with your antivirus your computer will still remain slow.

Many of our customers also incorrectly think that the amount of pictures and music stored on their hard drive will cause the computer to slow down.  This is incorrect – the only time this will be an issue is if you have completely filled the drive and there is no room left.  You will know about this when windows warns you about “low disk space”

At this point you might think it’s time to call in the experts, however there is good news.

The good news is – there is a simple tool that can fix this problem for you.

It’s called a “registry cleaner”

The registry is a part of your computer that stores information about the hardware and software on your computer.  This can become corrupted when programs, viruses and spyware are removed from the computer and information is left behind, causing the computer to scan for information that isn’t there.  As the amount of missing information builds up, the amount of time the computer spends scanning increases and this results in your pc running slow.

Running a registry cleaner can have a dramatic affect on the performance and it only takes one click to complete the job.  You don’t need to worry about anything technical and the process can be repeated on a monthly basis to keep your computer in tip-top condition.

Our tool of choice is REGISTRY EASY | You can even get a FREE scan to assess your pc by clicking HERE | We highly recommend this product to you.

Why is my laptop going too slowly?

Your first experiences spent with your new computer started so incredibly well. It used to run windows xp so quickly. Of course now it’s not quite the same! Programs take a great deal longer to execute. You now ask Why is my computer running slow ? You are tempted to buy a new personal computer but this is definitely not the right answer. Aside from the additional cost, there is no justifiable reason to do this and you can instead save your money.

The best news is there is a fix for this. I had a similar problem and wrote about it called http://www.whyismycomputerrunningslow.org This web site describes my frustrating experiences with my slow desktop computer and tells how I resolved the issues easily and cost effectively. It’s definitely worth a try.

There are a bunch of things you can do to improve the speed of your personal computer. A frequent cause of a slow pc is insufficient hard disk space. You can simply find more disk space by removing temporary files. Another step you can make would be to run a registry cleaner program. These are cheap and prove very effective.

Something else you could try is to run a defragger on your computer. This could help to make it run faster.

After having a personal computer for a while you will have installed many applications that you no longer run. These software components must be removed using Control Panel Add/Remove programs.

Another cause for a very slow desktop computer is the ever increasing amount of spyware found on your pc. The best way to delete these is to buy an anti-malware software package and execute it. Loads of folks found this to work well.

Some folks discovered that by simply emptying the contents of their recycle bin, it speeded things up.

In summing up, the neatest solution I found is to get your hands on a registry cleaner and run it on your personal computer. This can be carried out easily and at low cost.

How to Clean up Computer Registry

It’s fair to say that if you are reading this article then you already know that most of your computer problems or errors are originated from the registry of your system. It is likely you have never asked anyone how to go about cleaning the registry. The errors which affect your PC’s performance are down to two major causes and before cleaning up your system you should be aware of these.

Deleting software manually without going through the process of uninstalling it causes you to have an unclean registry and explains why you will often find unused files/data saturating your registry. If this is something you perform regularly then you will notice how it affects your computer. A much greater problem could be Registry Crash and an incompatible hardware driver is one of the possible causes of this. Sometimes, forcing a software to install even though an error message occurs during the installation, could be the problem as well. A more serious problem is the blue screen of death which might appear.

Even if you always carry out the process of keeping your registry clean and safe, it is important to note that your computer will still slow down gradually. This particularly happens when you use your PC/laptop for months without ever carrying out routine maintenance. To help you keep your computer registry organized, Windows has its own maintenance programs such as disk defragmenter or disk clean up. Your computer should perform better by performing maintenance regularly although just because it is organized that does not necessarily mean clean. When you carry out this routine maintenance regularly with windows tools, all of those unused files are kept together in a particular space of your disk. If maintenance is never performed on the system then these files are spread all over it.

Many registry cleaning software packages are available on the market to help you clean this essential part of your computer system. You may perform the scanning every day to make sure your computer never runs slow nor will you become frustrated with the constant errors again. Some versions of registry software programs provide many features within them. To make it more convenient for its users, it includes a built-in scheduler, junk file cleaner and more. You might regret it if you make a buying decision too early as you may end up buying registry software that is not the best quality and cause even more errors.

How To Fix A Slow Computer

You know it is time to do something when your computer slows to a crawl or begins doing weird things like shutting itself down. Not only is this frustrating it can be the first indicator of more severe issues. Before you try to address the problem, you should know some possible causes that will slow your computer down.

Potential Culprits

The first place you want to look when your computer slows down is your activity. Your computer retains information about every place you visit on the internet. This information is stored on a little file in your computer called a Cookie and in you temporary internet files folder. You would be amazed at how much these small junk files can clog up your machine over a period of time and really slow it down. Fixing this problem is a matter of knowing where to go in your system. Following is a systematic guide to cleaning up your computer and alleviate slowdowns.

1)    First go to your start menu and locate the control panel button.
2)    Once in the control panel look for the icon labeled internet options
3)    Once you click internet options look for the option to delete browsing history and click on delete
4)    This will bring up another options menu, go all the way to the bottom and click delete all
5)    This will bring up one more windows that will ask you if you are sure, you want to delete your browsing history. Included in this small box will be a smaller white box that you can check to delete files and settings stored by add-ons, go ahead and check that box and then yes.

You have now cleared your computer of annoying small files and bits that will slow down performance. If you are still having problems, it is time to move to the next issue that can slow your computer.

Defrag

This is a bit more technical in nature but thankfully, Microsoft has built a program into their operating system that will do it for you.

What happens again overtime your computer saves information to your hard drive. When it does, the information can fragment. Now this does not hurt your ability to access the programs or information but the gaps in between the fragments becomes wasted space. It is wasted because your pc will not try to use the empty area to store information. This is another issue that is fairly easy to address, simply follow these steps:

1)    Go to your start up menu
2)    Click the all programs tab
3)    Find the accessories tab
click on the system tools menu
5)    In system tools you will find disk defragmenter, click on it
6)    The window that opens will show your available hard drives in a window at the top and an analyze button, once you run the analysis a window will open telling you if you need to defrag or not. If the program suggests defrag then by all means do so.

Be aware that you will need to leave your computer unused during this process. Any disturbance to the PC may result in an incomplete defrag. This is best done of an evening when you will be asleep, as it can take many hours to complete.

Virus

A word that sends shivers down the spine of every computer owner, the dreaded virus. Every day someone in the world is sitting in front of their computer trying to devise a virus that will destroy computers. It always amazes me when people do things like this, but its important for you to know this regarding safety.

In the case of computer virus prevention, the best offense is a good defense. A good updateable anti-virus is crucial for all pc owners. Prevention is so much better than cure in this case because once you have a virus there can be permanent damage even once the virus is removed.

When you choose your antivirus be sure to set it up to do regular scans of your computer. This will help you to identify a virus before it can do any harm, follow the directions that come with your chosen software. Also, be sure that your antivirus offers frequent updates to the virus database. The best way to choose your software will be to talk to local professionals or other pc owners you may know.

Spyware

Nearly as detrimental to your pc health are programs called spy ware or ad ware. These are often times add-ons that you will pick up when you download programs from the internet. These are used to track your activities for advertisers or in the case of malicious spyware to steal your personal information. Just some of the information these programs can spy on includes your personal passwords. In this digital age, more and more people are banking and paying bills online. In order to protect yourself from these programs invest in a good firewall. Windows comes with one installed, however many people choose their own.

Installing spyware blockers will aid you in scanning your computer for these types of spy ware that may already be on your pc.

Registry

The last area we will discuss is your registry; this is an area of your pc that enters a string of information for all the programs installed on your computer as well as various other bits of information. When your registry gets full of broken links or useless data, your computer will begin to slow down or have errors.

There are an array of fantastic products on the market, including free products that are downloadable on the internet. I have used many of these programs and some are easier to use than others are. This is another choice you should talk to a pc repair professional or other pc users about. Like antivirus and anti spy ware there are new programs cropping up all the time. A good microsoft registry cleaner will clean up useless entries and speed your computer up dramatically.

Conclusion

There are many different things that cause computer slowdowns and errors to occur. Finding the problem can sometimes be as frustrating as the problem itself. Many times this is because you are dealing with a combination of two or more of the problems listed above. When all else fails seek professional help, when you have gone through all the simple steps listed above without fixing your problem you may have a hardware malfunction.
