Quick Fixes To Make Windows Boot Faster

The Windows operating system is the most used operating system in personal computing. It has many advantages over other operating systems such as its ease of use, but it also has one disadvantage, and that is sometimes it can be slow to boot up. It doesn’t make any difference what version of Windows you have on your PC, if you use even just a couple of the following tips, you will make Windows boot faster.

One program to native to the Windows OS which will be turned on from the factory is called Windows Automatic Indexing. This program keeps track of what types of files you have on your computer and where they are located. It is designed to help you find files much quicker than just browsing through your folders. The downside is that it can seriously slow down your computer when you go to boot it up. Try turning Automatic Indexing off to get a needed boost in starting up your machine.

Another resource hog on to start up is your Fonts folder. Each font you have sitting in this folder must be loaded when your computer starts. If you have a bunch of fonts in your computer, it will naturally be slower. You really do not need to many fonts unless you happen to be a designer. Try to decide which fonts you can live without and get rid of them.

If you’re anything near like the average user, you will be trying out new programs all the time. There will be plenty of them you do not like so you’ll have to uninstall them. When you uninstall a program, and install another one, the programs will install in any gaps in the data on the hard drive. This causes the programs to be scattered, and if it is needed upon start up, it will take longer. Defragging your hard drive can help with this problem.

Junk files are a real big problem for a lot of people. Using the Disk Cleanup tool can help get rid of junk files which are no longer needed and causing your computer to drag. Some of these will be temporary Internet files, while others will be bits of programs not being used anymore but still loading into memory when Windows starts. Disk Cleanup will take care of this for you.

You can decrease your computers start up time by adding extra RAM. It will also make your overall computer performance much better. If you are suffering from a slow starting computer, take the above advice to heart, and more importantly put it to use. If you only use one of these, it will make Windows boot faster.

How to Make Vista Boot Faster and Optimize Your Computer

Windows Vista is supposed to be the best that Microsoft has to offer. Some people are not happy with it while others are very happy with it. Some say Vista boots up slow, others say there is no difference. If you believe there is a slow boot up problem there are a few tips that can help you to try to get it to boot up a bit faster. The more ram and the bigger the processor the better that your computer will handle Windows Vista.

While you have this window open you can also go into start up programs and disable ones that you do not need to load up on startup like a chat program. You can also go to the services tab and disable services that you do not need to have running the whole time your computer is on such as the camera loader, a bit torrent program, or a peer to peer program.

You will be able to know which programs that you need to run in the background for example most of the Microsoft programs, indexing programs, antiviral software, auto updaters and so on. If you are unsure do not disable it. Also be sure that you back up your PC so you can restore it if anything goes wrong.

Another important thing to do is to keep your computer hard drive clean. Remove old outdated programs and files. Backup media files to disc or an external hard drive to free up room on your computer. Run the disk cleaner every few days, and be sure that cookies, temp folders, and caches are emptied as they fill up quickly and slow your computer down.

You should run a good registry cleaner. Always backup your registry before you run a cleaner. A large registry will slow down your boot up and also make your computer sluggish. You also need to defragment your system weekly to keep your computer running smoothly. This keeps your file system in check so that it is optimized.

How To Reduce Windows Boot-up Time

You’ve done this all before. And got the t-shirt. You have something that you urgently need to do on your computer but it’s switched off. You growl. You’ve got time to brew and drink a cup of coffee while Windows messes around and thinks about waking up your PC. If you didn’t know better, you’d think it had never done this before.

So how can you make your Windows PC boot up quicker?

It seems like the older your PC is, the more time it takes for it to boot up and start running. You begin to think that Microsoft has shares in your energy company as they appear to want you to leave your computer running 24 hours a day.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to reduce the time it takes your computer to run through its boot sequence.

Windows checks anything that automatically runs as soon as you start your computer.Naturally that includes the version of Windows you’re running. And all the other things you’ve asked it to run. Your instant messenger program. Apple’s iTunes music program. Your anti-virus software. Maybe anti-spyware software. Skype or another VOIP program. Anything and everything you might need. Every time Windows boots up, it checks each and every one of these start-up programs.

You can find out what all these programs are. But you should be careful – whilst you may not recognize a program by name, that doesn’t mean you can safely remove it. Some essential Windows services that run in the background have names you wouldn’t begin to guess at. But removing them, you’ll be in trouble. If you’re in any doubt about a start-up program, play safe and leave it be. It won’t do you any good if you remove a program, only to spend hours (or dollars) fixing the trouble. Unless you’re brave, I’d suggest leaving start-up programs to your computer support person.

The next thing you can do is clean up the Windows registry. This is the dark place where Windows stores information about your PC and the programs on it. Most of it is necessary. But removing or upgrading programs will almost always leave traces of itself in the registry. Over time, this will mean your computer slows down while it checks all this out of date stuff. Lots of PC problems have been traced to this old information laying around.

The easiest way to clean the registry is to run a special piece of software called (surprisingly enough) a registry checker. This will wizz through your registry, checking for things that shouldn’t be there. Once it’s done that, you’ll get a report and if you’re happy to let it, the software will trot off and fix the reported errors. This is probably the simplest thing you can do to speed up your PC. I recommend this registry cleaner software – it’s the one I personally use.
